On a clear day, watching elephants cross the plains beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of those classic African safari scenes you’ve probably seen in photographs; except nothing quite prepares you for seeing it for yourself.

Tsavo East feels different almost immediately.

This is a big country, with big sky, vast landscapes, open plains, and distinctive red earth stretching towards the horizon.

And that red earth is responsible for one of Tsavo’s most memorable sights: its famous ‘red elephants’.

They’re not a different species. The elephants cover themselves in Tsavo’s iron-rich soil when dust bathing, coating their naturally grey skin in a striking rusty-red colour.

Tsavo East is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and many other species. The Galana River provides a lifeline through this otherwise arid landscape and creates excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

There’s a wonderful sense of space here, making Tsavo East particularly appealing if you’re looking for that feeling of being somewhere genuinely wild.

🦁 Tsavo West – For Dramatic Landscapes and Legendary Lions

If Tsavo East is about vast open spaces, Tsavo West is its more rugged and dramatic neighbour.

Here you’ll find volcanic landscapes, hills, lava flows, woodland and natural springs, making game drives wonderfully varied.

One of the highlights is Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water originating in the Chyulu Hills creates an oasis within the park and attracts wildlife including hippos and crocodiles.

Tsavo is also famous for its distinctive male lions, many of which have much smaller manes than those of lions elsewhere in Africa. Their ancestors became part of safari folklore following the extraordinary story of the Tsavo lions during the construction of the Kenya–Uganda Railway in 1898.

Today, spotting one of Tsavo’s distinctive lions is a very different, and considerably more enjoyable, wildlife encounter!

But here’s the good news: you don’t necessarily have to choose. In fact, I would always advise doing all three.

Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East can work beautifully together as part of a carefully planned Kenya safari. Travelling between them allows you to watch the landscapes change while experiencing three very different sides of Kenya’s wildlife.

And there’s another advantage.

Continue south-east through Tsavo, and you’re gradually making your way towards Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline.

After early-morning game drives, dusty safari tracks, and days filled with incredible wildlife encounters, imagine finishing your adventure with a few nights beside the warm Indian Ocean.

How many days do I need for Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East?

For a comfortable safari, we’d suggest allowing around five to seven nights across the three parks. This gives you time to enjoy several game drives without feeling as though you’re constantly packing up and moving on. Your ideal length will depend on the pace of the holiday you prefer and the wildlife experiences that are most important to you.

Can I combine Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East in one safari?

Absolutely, it makes a brilliant combination. Each park has a distinct character, so rather than feeling repetitive, the journey offers changing landscapes and wildlife encounters as you travel from Amboseli through Tsavo towards the Kenyan coast.

Which is better – Tsavo East or Tsavo West?

Neither is necessarily better; they’re simply different. Tsavo East is renowned for its vast open landscapes and famous red elephants, while Tsavo West offers more varied, dramatic scenery, including hills, woodland, volcanic landscapes and Mzima Springs. If time allows, experiencing both gives you a wonderful contrast.

Is Amboseli worth including in a Kenya safari?

For many visitors, absolutely. Amboseli offers some of Kenya’s finest elephant viewing, and on a clear day the sight of elephants crossing the plains with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background is one of Africa’s most iconic safari experiences.

Can I see the Big Five in Amboseli and Tsavo?

The wider Amboseli and Tsavo safari circuit is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. That’s part of the excitement of a genuine safari: every game drive is different.

When is the best time to visit Amboseli and Tsavo?

For classic wildlife viewing, the best months to visit Amboseli and Tsavo are generally June to October and January to February, when conditions are drier and animals tend to gather around reliable water sources. July to October is particularly popular, with generally excellent game-viewing conditions.

The greener months can also be very rewarding. November to December brings the shorter rains, while March to May is usually the wetter period. The landscapes become beautifully green; birdlife is superb and there are often fewer visitors, although heavier rain can occasionally affect roads and game drives.

If your priority is wildlife viewing combined with a beach stay on the Kenyan coast, I’d particularly consider January–February or July–October, depending on your preferred travel dates.

Can I combine a Tsavo and Amboseli safari with Diani Beach?

Yes, and this is one of the reasons we love this particular Kenyan itinerary. After exploring Amboseli and Tsavo, you can continue towards the Indian Ocean coast and finish your holiday at beautiful Diani Beach. It’s a wonderfully natural combination of adventure and relaxation.

How long should I spend at Diani Beach after my safari?

We’d suggest around four to seven nights for most travellers. Four nights provides time to unwind after your safari, while a week gives you the opportunity to properly relax and enjoy the beach, resort and optional activities. It really depends on whether you prefer your holiday to be safari-led or a balanced mix of wildlife and beach.

Is a Kenya safari and beach holiday suitable for first-time safari travellers?

It’s an excellent choice. You experience several contrasting safari environments and some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife before finishing with time to relax on the coast. It offers a wonderful introduction to Africa without making the entire holiday about game drives.

The Painted Wolf is one of Africa’s most endangered mammals and South Africa’s most endangered carnivore. Within the 20,000 square-kilometre Greater Kruger National Park, which sustains the largest numbers of Wild Dogs in South Africa, it is estimated that there are between 450 – 500 dogs.

This efficient predator is known by several names; Painted Wolf, Painted Hunting Dog, African Hunting Dog, Cape Hunting Dog, African Painted Dog and the African Wild Dog.

The South African bush offers a rich variety of animals that attract millions of tourists every year to their national parks and game reserves. The ‘Big 5’ get the ‘lion share’ of the press, but while on safari there are so many other animals that will make your safari experience game drive so rewarding.

Traversing the African bush by day and night is exciting and magical in so many ways. The rich and varied fauna and flora, the sounds, scents and unpredictability of what could be around the next bend in the road, all adds to the excitement and uniqueness of an African Safari.

South Africa offers an amazing range of national parks and game reserves covering a diverse selection of landscapes. From coastal reserves to desert, to swamps, to plains, to mountainous regions to pristine bushveld. Each region offers a variety of fauna and flora adapted to life within these unique eco-zones.

So, what makes the African Wild Dog so special

Their pack structure is led by an Alpha male and female with the latter having dominance in pack. The Alpha pair are the only dogs that breed in pack while the others help raise the pups. Should another female have a litter the alpha female will either kill or adopt her pups.

The alpha pair bond is very close. They will almost always lie close together and the alpha male will urinate on top of where the alpha female has urinated, almost claiming ownership. A typical pack size would be between 12 to 30 dogs, in Kenya and Tanzania the pack sizes are generally much larger.

Their beautiful individual markings and social behaviour add to the magic of coming across this predator in the wild. Moving expertly through the bush on the hunt, their streamlined body naturally camouflaged against the African bush, they are truly a delightful sight to behold.

When hunting the pack will locate prey (normally impala, their favourite meal), and they will then hunt down the prey overcoming the target through sheer stamina, they will literally outrun their quarry.

They are ruthless when they go in for the kill, furiously attacking the prey and overcoming their quarry by sheer numbers. Wild dogs consume their prey quickly to avoid losing their meal to lions or hyenas, their main enemies.

After returning from a successful hunt, the dogs will be stimulated by the pups, to regurgitate food for them. The entire pack assists in raising the pups. Unlike many other ‘pack’ animals when young females come of age they are dispelled from the pack and go on to join other groups of males to form their own packs. This is believed to stop inbreeding.

Apart from the ‘Big 5’, spotting African Wild Dogs is an additional treat and there are only a few reserves where you can still enjoy these amazing creatures in their natural environment.

South Africa offers five key wildlife reserves where these incredible animals can be found in the wild. Here are my suggestions, in order of priority, where to go if you want to see the Painted Wolves of South Africa.

Wild Dogs in the Greater Kruger National Park

The Greater Kruger National Park is the largest national park in South Africa and home to approximately 450-500 African Wild Dogs. An Awesome base to enjoy an incredible South African Safari in this region is at the Klaserie Sands River Camp.

Located just a 3-hour drive from Shaka International Airport you can enjoy a memorable South African Safari set amongst 96,000 Hectares of wilderness, rolling hills and magnificent wildlife.

The Hluhluwe Game Reserve is the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa and was once the exclusive hunting ground of King Shaka. The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve originally consisted of three separate reserves that were joined under its current title in 1989.

The Hluhluwe Game Reserve is world renowned for its role in Rhino conservation and the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Centenary Capture Centre sets a benchmark for animal capture and sustainable utilization throughout Africa.

It was here in the 1960s that Operation Rhino helped to save these animals by breeding and relocating them to other reserves where their numbers were breed up.

Hluhluwe lies to the north and enjoys a mountainous landscape, while iMfolozi to the south, is ideal for game viewing with its more open plains.

Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge

The Painted Wolves of the Madikwe Game Reserve

Our Wildlife Safari Checklist

• Binoculars
• Good walking boots (I prefer boots that cover my ankle) and good comfortable socks.
• Wear light coloured clothing (khaki) which is best to deter mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours like blue and black. Not only will they help deter the mosquitoes, but they will also help you feel cooler by reflecting sunlight.
• Insect repellent (I would suggest buying insect repellent locally in South Africa, Tabard is best)
• Sunglasses
• Warm clothing (jersey / jacket for evenings and early mornings)
• Sunscreen
• Hat
• Guide books (birding and mammal guide books will make your safari more rewarding, and help you to identify and learn about the surrounding fauna)

Shamefully, the Painted Wolf now only occur in six of the thirty-four countries that they once roamed. I would encourage you to include a wildlife region that supports the Painted Wolf as sighting these magnificent creatures in the wild is truly magical.

For many people travelling to South Africa on safari will be a significant trip; possibly a ‘once in a lifetime’ adventure. It’s a long haul and you want to make your time count. So ideally, on safari you want to see the ‘Big 5’ (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhino), and off course the many more beautiful animals that make an African Safari Holiday to South Africa so special.

But first a little about these magnificent creatures, Rhinos. World-wide there are five species of rhinoceros: white, black, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan. In Southern Africa, you will find two species: Black Rhinoceros and White Rhinoceros.

Due to its large size, the rhino’s only predator in the wild are mainly lions. Lion will prey on rhino calves and weak individuals if the opportunity arises. We humans are the biggest threat to the rhinoceros population and we have sadly hunted this magnificent animal to the brink of extinction for their horn.

A group of rhinos is referred to as a: ‘Crash of Rhinos’.

White Rhino in Kruger National Park

The white rhino is also known as the ‘square-lipped’ rhino, this magnificent beast stands between 1.5 – 1.8m and weighs between 1,800 – 3,000kg. The gestation period for a white rhinoceros is between 16 and 18 months. The white rhino is a grazer, using its flat, square lip to effectively cut and eat grass. They are the more common sighted of the rhino as they are often spotted on the plains grazing.

When in danger the white rhino calf runs in front of her mother. The black rhino calf runs behind the mother when fleeing potential danger. The Southern white rhino was once on the brink of extinction with only around 50 individuals left in the wild. Thanks to a concerted conservation effort they were rescued from the brink of extinction and now numbers are estimated at around 20,0000 individuals.

Sadly, poaching has become a major problem in South Africa, threatening the species yet again.

Black Rhino

The hook-lipped rhino (black rhino) is distinguishable by its smaller size, hook lip, and as a browser, inhabits a different habitat to the white rhino. Black rhinos are more active during the night-time when they are found foraging and drinking. The black rhino is more aggressive and shyer than the white rhino.

The black rhino stands at about 1.6m and weighs between 900 – 1,350kg. The gestation period for a black rhinoceros is between 15 and 16 months.

Black rhinos tend to be solitary and generally harder to view as they are often browsing in thick bush. In danger, the black rhino calf runs behind the mother, who will crash through the thick bush making a path to escape.

My Favourite Luxury Safari Destinations for Rhino

I am selecting reserves in regions that are typically easily included in a South African Safari Holiday. For me the best destinations to see Rhino in South Africa are:

Mpumalanga Province

The lowveld is my favourite wildlife destination in South Africa. The Greater Kruger National Park (GKNP) was formed as the result of a landmark agreement between the Kruger National Park and surrounding Private Nature Reserves. Together they have removed their boundary fences, creating the GKNP.

The GKNP comprises of an area measuring more than 20,000,000 hectares (20,000 square kilometres), managed under their joint conservation. The Private Lodges within the GKNP are renowned for their luxurious lodges and awesome game viewing opportunities.

Baobab Ridge 

This fantastic reserve offers an affordable, luxury bush experience. Renowned for its hospitable and informative staff. The game drives offer you an opportunity to locate the ‘Big 5’ as well as a variety of other exciting African mammals. I absolutely love this lodge; the staff and excellent game viewing truly make your visit so memorable.

Klaserie Sands River Camp

At the Klaserie Sands River Camp expect to be impressed. This lush and intimate lodge accommodates just eight guests in luxurious suites along the dry N’tsiri riverbed. At Klaserie Sands River Camp you can enjoy a complete African safari experience, with daily game-drives as well as, guided bush walks. It’s a very special place in the bush, I love it.

MalaMala Game Reserve

Comprising 13,300 hectares, MalaMala shares a 12-mile unfenced border with the Kruger National Park. Visiting this lodge is often rewarded with exceptional wildlife encounters. Apart from the magnificent rhino and the other ‘Big Five’, African wild dog and cheetah are frequently spotted on this reserve.

Londolozi

Londolozi is in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve within the GKNP. The reserve is world-renowned for its leopards as well as the breeding herds of elephant and buffalo that roam throughout Londolozi reserve.

The white rhino and lion concentrations are among the highest recorded on the African continent. Intimate leopard sightings are frequent at Londolozi.

Thornybush 

The twelve lodges available in the Thornybush collection offer visitors exceptional game viewing from a selection of camps and lodges in a pristine part of the GKNP. The reserve covers 14,000 hectares of unspoilt African bushveld offering excellent game viewing opportunities of the ‘Big 5’.

Ulusaba

Experience the African bush in style at Ulusaba. This is a stunning reserve with exceptional accommodation options. Ulusaba means “place of little fear”. At award-winning Ulusaba you can traverse over 13,500 hectares of private reserve with your dedicated Ranger and Tracker who will tailor your game drive just for you! Pure luxury in the bush.

North West Province

The Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg is an easy 3-hour drive from Johannesburg and ideal for a safari, especially if you are limited with time. This ‘malaria free’ reserve boasts several camps and apart from the ‘Big 5’ offers an awesome variety of game. Virtually all the animal species native to southern Africa can be found here, including the Big 5, wild dog, Roan, Tsessebe and Sable antelope and more than 360 species of bird.

I have visited this reserve often over the years and I have always had awesome game sightings and I have always seen rhino. Tshukudu Bush Lodge is an awesome place to stay, built on a hill overlooking a waterhole. This luxury lodge has only 6 luxury chalets and 4 suites

Kwa-Zulu Natal

Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park

The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa and under 3 hours’ drive from Durban. This 96,000-hectare reserve is divided into two separate Parks, namely the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and Imfolozi Game Reserve. Both reserves support large populations of Rhino

The Hluhluwe side is more commercial and has more accommodation to choose from. It is truly an awesome reserve with rolling hills which makes for some spectacular scenery.

Phinda Game Reserve 

Phinda Game Reserve is located just outside of ISimangaliso Wetland Park on the northern Kwa Zulu Natal coast. The park is known for its concentration of wildlife, including both white and black rhino. The Awesome, &Beyond Phinda Forest Lodge, offers stunning accommodation, very special place to stay.

Eastern Cape

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

This awesome reserve is home to numerous rhino. While in the reserve visit the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre which gives information and education about rhino poaching in South Africa. Shamwari is a stunning reserve. 

Amakhala

The Amakhala Game Reserve is in the malaria free Eastern Cape of South Africa. This reserve was created in 1999 as a joint conservation venture between the owners of six lodges who are direct descendants of the original British settlers of 1820. Amakhala offers excellent game viewing and superb selection of lodges to choose from.

Limpopo Province

Welgevoden

The Welgevonden Game Reserve (Dutch for “well found”), is a 34,850-hectare game reserve in the Waterberg District of the Limpopo Province. Less than 4-hours’ drive from Johannesburg, Welgevoden is in a ‘malaria free’ area and ideal for a luxury stay in the bush. Welgevoden offers a choice of 17 magnificent luxury lodges. The lodges in the Welgevoden game reserve are truly amazing.

Marakele National Park

Located in the gorgeous Waterberg Mountains, Marakele National Park has a fantastic variety of wildlife, including a good population of rhino. The incredible scenery of the area makes for fantastic photo opportunities. From Johannesburg allow around 3 ½ hours to drive up to Marakele.

North West Province

Madikwe Game Reserve

Saddling Botswana, Madikwe Game Reserve is a conservation area offering visitors a rich variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, leopards, and rhinos, plus the endangered African wild dogs. Hundreds of bird species include ostrich, vultures, and the large Kori bustard.

Like Pilanesberg, Madikwe is also a ‘malaria free’ area. You can find both white and black rhino in the 750 square kilometre reserve, and you can expect to frequently spot rhino. Driving from Johannesburg allow just over 4 hours to reach the reserve.

Finally

Sadly, the world’s last male northern white rhino died in Kenya on 19th March 2018. There are only two surviving female northern white rhinos’ left and the only change of avoiding extinction is through IVF treatment. What a tragedy and an embarrassment to the entire human race.

I want to close with a plug for a charity that I really do believe are doing outstanding work in the ongoing fight against wildlife crime: Veterans for Wildlife.
