From the tranquillity of rural Coloane to the buzz of the city; Macao certainly does offer something for everyone. Here is a taste of Macao, but there is only one way to enjoy this Awesome destination, and that is to get there.

The Historic Centre of Macao

I would recommend starting off in the Historic Centre of Macao. This area is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and the perfect place to get a feel for the old Macao. Comprising a collection of over twenty locations commemorating the unique mixture of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macao .

The area offers a variety of attractions including: museums, historical buildings, wonderful food outlets, beautiful beaches, spas, shopping malls, dazzling shows, and activities ranging from golf to hiking to bungy jumping. There is something for everyone to enjoy on holiday in Macao.

Go for a stroll around old Taipa Village. This traditional area of narrow streets, temples, the Taipa Houses Museum, squares and ‘shophouses’ including “Food Street” where you will find some Awesome restaurants. There are two museums that you should include in your itinerary; the Maritime Museum and the Macao Museum of Art.

Visit the breath-taking A-Ma Cultural Village which is a replica of a Qing dynasty palace. The palace is dedicated to the goddess A-Ma, after whom Macao was named. The nearby A-Ma Statue sits at the top of a 170m high peak with Awesome views over the Pearl River Delta.

The Macao Tower 

The 338m Macao Tower is one of the Macao’s most popular attractions. The tower is listed as one of the world’s tallest towers. From the top of the tower enjoy the Awesome views across the Pearl River Delta, enjoy a selection of unique adventurous and thrilling activities while on top of the world or relax in the revolving restaurant over a scrumptious meal while soaking up the amazing vistas.

Bungy Jump

The AJ Hackett Macao Tower Bungy Jump is 233m / 764ft high, making this jump currently a Guinness World Record for the Highest Commercial Bungy Jump in the world. Jumpers leap from a platform 233m above the ground and experience the ultimate free fall experience before slowing down 30 metres from the ground and rebounding back up.

You will apparently reach speeds of up to 200kmh during a five-second freefall and stretch a 50-metre bungy up to four times its unloaded length. This is not for me, if you do it, let me know how you got along.

Sky Jump

The Sky Jump are for those who would like to jump from the tower (not me) but are looking for a less scary way than Bungy. Still not for me, but the Sky Jump looks fun and drops you from the Tower’s outer rim to ground level in a 20-second tethered ‘flight’. The Sky Jump is done from the same platform as the Bungy at a chilling 233m/764ft.

Sky Walk

This is more my thing. Strolling around the Macao Tower at 233 meters/764 feet above ground level. There is no hand rail and it is frighteningly high. But your harnessed in and you will get the picture and view of a lifetime as you stroll, tentatively around the rim.

Tower Climb

Finally, not an activity for the fainthearted; the Tower Climb, also known as the Mast Climb. When you have just got to get higher than anyone else; scale the top 100 metres of the tower and stand on the summit of the Macao Tower. You would have conquered Macao’s highest summit at 338 meters/1109 feet. Well done, I am afraid however, I will not be there to welcome you, but Well Done you!

Observation Lounge

The Macao Tower is not just all about adventurous activities. The tower’s ‘Observation Lounge’ is also located at 223m up in the sky. From the sanctuary of the spacious lounge, enjoy the spectacular 360° vistas from behind the three storey reinforced glass windows. From this vantage point take in the entire Macao Peninsula, Taipa, Coloane, and look over to China. Very relaxing.

There are a host of food outlets, cafes and restaurants, but I would recommend 360° Café. Apart from the scrumptious cuisine, the views are dramatic to say the least.

Dinner at 360° Café is Awesome with the most stunning views. The restaurant rotates fully every 45 minutes. Enjoy the sunset and watch the skyline change as the lights of Macao come to life. This is truly a unique and romantic experience.

Fisherman’s Wharf  

Fisherman’s Wharf is located at Macao’s outer harbour, within 5-minutes’ walk from the Macao Ferry Terminal and Heliport, this is the largest leisure and themed entertainment complex on the Macao Peninsula. Housed in buildings which imitate the historic and waterside cities from around the world such as: Cape Town, San Francisco and Amsterdam.

The European-themed architectures feature Babylon Casino, a convention and exhibition centre, the Legend Palace Hotel, the Harbourview Hotel, the Rocks Hotel, a marina, numerous dining experiences, shopping and entertainment facilities. This vibrant area of Macao creates an unique and multicultural experience. Great location to cruise around, try the Brasserie De Paristo for an Awesome Dinner Buffet.

With its sparkling city skyline as the backdrop, Macao is alive with entertainment. There are an abundance of bars, clubs, casinos, live music and spectacular world-class shows, Macao is a city that knows how to entertain and it ‘Rocks’. Previous performers include the Rolling Stones and Madonna

There is no shortage of places to party, Macao has a vibrant club scene. The Cubic Club is renowned as one of the best hotspots in Asia. They regularly feature international DJ’s.

If you are a night owl you will be impressed with the nightlife in Macao. From the pubs and bars on the Avenida Sun Yat Sen, to the luxury hotels across the peninsula and Cotai area. For those of you looking for a more traditional, cultural experience, Macao hosts numerous annual festivals, live musicals, cabarets and theatrical performances.

There are a lot of casinos where you can try your luck. Most are located in the Cotai area or in the southern part of the peninsula.

Relax in Coloane

Coloane is Macao’s southernmost land mass, where the lush, green countryside, hills, quiet villages and sandy beaches offer a relaxing alternative to busy northern Macao.

Where is Macao

Macao lies 40 miles south west of Hong Kong on the south eastern coast of mainland China in the Pearl River Delta. It borders China’s Guangdong province in the north and is surrounded by the South China Sea.

How Big is Macao

Macao’s total land area is around 30 square kilometres, around a quarter of the size of Jersey. It is comprised of a peninsula and two islands.

Getting to Macao

Most UK visitors arrive with flights via Hong Kong. The flight takes around 12 hours with Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic or British Airways offering a direct service into Hong Kong.

Flying Cathay Pacific is truly awesome, a really good product. The cabin crew are charming and so efficient; the food is delicious. The best thing is that on arrival in Hong Kong just clear customs and immigration and take the 70-minute high speed ferry ride direct from Hong Kong Airport to Macao.

Macao also has its own airport, making travel between Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Mainland China, and other countries in the Far East so easy.

Visa requirements

British passport holders do not need a visa for entry to Macao for stays of up to six months. But you must make sure that you have six months validity on your passport from the departure date from Macao. For the most up-to-date travel information always check the Foreign travel advice – GOV.UK website.

Getting understood in Macao

Although Chinese (Cantonese) and Portuguese are the official languages of Macao. You will find that English is commonly spoken in commerce, trade, and the tourism industry.

Climate

Macao enjoys a subtropical climate with average annual temperature of just over 20°C and humidity generally high. Winter is from January to March and is dry and cooler with average temperatures around 15°C while spring averages 22°C. 

Summer is hot and humid with average temperatures around 28°C and occasional typhoons between May and September. October to December is a pleasant time to visit when it is sunny and comfortably warm at around 23°C average. 

History

Historically, Macao was inhabited by Cantonese farmers and fishermen. The Portuguese settlers arrived in the 1500s and changed Macao’s fortunes forever. Macao quickly became a significant trading post linking Europe with China and Japan.

The establishment of Hong Kong in the mid-19th century, saw many foreign merchants leave Macao. However, Macao continued to develop and attracted a growing number of travellers, amongst them a significant number of writers and artists.

Modern Macao

Nowadays, Macao offers visitors a contemporary city established while retaining many of its historic sectors. The Macao skyline is dominated by modern skyscrapers, stunning hotels, and casinos. Contrasting this modern take is the Historic Centre which was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005.

Luxury:

Taipei offers a variety of accommodation from hostels to ultra-luxurious hotels. If you have the budget try the Mandarin Oriental Taipei, it is a wonderful hotel. Located in the Songshan district, expect to be impressed. The hotel offers a choice of deluxe king rooms and club suites. The guest rooms are exquisitely decorated and finished to a high standard.

Another great choice for a luxury stay in Taipei is the 60 bedroom boutique Hotel Éclat in the Da’an district of the city. The ultra-luxurious rooms exude class with the finest touches to enhance your stay; the walk-in rain forest shower is amazing. The Hotel Éclat Taipei is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The hotel showcases some incredible art pieces including famous artists such as Salvador Dali, Gao Xiao Wu and Chen Wenling. Mid-range:

Great mid-range hotels include the WESTGATE Hotel in Taipei City. This 121 bedroom hotel is conveniently located close by the Ximen MRT Station. The air-conditioned rooms are comfortably appointed and the location in the Wanhua district is great for the street markets, shopping and trying out the local cuisine.

Apartments:

For those who would prefer an apartment the Gloria Residence  provides superb accommodation in a great location, the Zhongshan District. You can select from an air-conditioned studio, one or two bedroom apartment. This modern hotel offers a continental breakfast and fabulous facilities including an indoor swimming pool. The spacious apartments offer a flat-screen TV, DVD player and an iPod dock. The kitchens even have an espresso machine.

Budget:

There are plenty options for budget travellers and backpackers. The CityInn Hotel Taipei Station Branch III is a mouth full, but it offers good clean accommodation in a great location at a very reasonable price. The hotel is just 5 minutes from Taipei’s main station and allows easy access to other public transport. Close to Q-SQUARE and a 5-minute walk from The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Taipei. It is a 5-minute drive from Ningxia Night Market and an hour’s drive from Taoyuan International Airport.

For really cheap accommodation in a good location try the Best Hostel in the Zhongshan district. The accommodation is in dormitories with single and double bed options. The accommodation is clean and modern. You can get a bed for less than £20 a night. The hostel is close by the Taipei Bus Station, Liaoningn and Ningxia night markets.

What to Do

In Taipei, you will need to try and spend at least three nights in order to explore and enjoy this vibrant city, it’s infectious.

You should climb up nearby Elephant Mountain to be rewarded with the brilliant view of the city skyline and the dominant building known as Taipei 101. Taipei 101 was officially classified as the world’s tallest skyscraper in 2004, and remained such until the completion of Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2009. It’s worth going to the top of this skyscraper to enjoy the amazing views from the 89th floor.

Food

The Taiwanese cuisine is impressive and distinctive, combining Taiwanese, Chinese and Japanese influences. From vibrant night markets to high-end restaurants there is something to satisfy every palate. Seafood is very popular as are chicken and pork dishes; try the xiaoyu huasheng (stir-fried fish dish with peanuts and pickled vegetables), it’s delicious. The vibrant night markets are fun with lots of great food options and interesting stalls.

Taiwan has a host of fabulous restaurants offering traditional foods to top international cuisine. Try the Din Tai Fung restaurants they offer seriously great food at reasonable prices, there are a number of branches including in the 101 building and the Fuxing store which are just fabulous. The Chamonix  restaurant chain offer dishes inspired by traditional Teppanyaki and French cuisine. Their stylish restaurants offer good value and a set menu. The Da Wan BBQ offers superb seafood and other meats, definitely worth a visit.

If it’s the brew that counts, Taiwan is famous for its tea plantations and some iconic blends like Ruisui honey black tea, Alishan high mountain tea and Pouchong tea won’t disappoint.

The devastating earthquake that hit Nepal on 25th April 2015 had a catastrophic impact on the tourism market, upon which many people and their families in Nepal rely. The best thing the travel community can do to help the Nepalese people right now, is to return and support the local economy.

Expect to visit ancient historic sites in the Kathmandu Valley, traverse the pristine Chitwan jungle in the south, or relax sipping a cocktail in lakeside, Pokhara taking in the celebrated views of the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas. In Nepal there is so much to do and so much to see, so where do we start?

Well Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and your likely entry point into the country. This article is aimed at the traveller seeking a more luxurious and laid back visit. So our journey starts at the Dwarika’s Hotel.

Where to stay in Kathmandu

The Dwarika’s Hotel  in Kathmandu is a living museum. Packed with exquisite artefacts and authentic furnishings, fixtures and fittings collected over time, from all around the country, expertly displayed throughout the hotel, it is truly amazing. But it’s the superb service and hospitality offered by the staff and management that sets this property aside. The hotel offers a welcome refuge from the invigorating, and what will initially seem frantic pace, of the capital city and its treasures.

What to do in Kathmandu

Kathmandu offers so much for visitors to explore and enjoy, a cultural dream holiday. You will need to allocate at least three days to visit the cultural and historic sites of the Newari cities of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, all located in the Kathmandu Valley. The main sites we would recommend you visit are:

The Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The earthquake did cause substancial damage to the area however sustained effort has been put in place to restore the buildings, temples and monuments to their previous glory. It is a magnificent area and you will need time to explore and enjoy this world heritage site.

A Durbar Square is the term used to describe a plaza and specific areas opposite the old royal palaces. The other really popular Durbar Squares that you should try and get to are Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. All three of these Durbar Squares are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Swayambhunath Temple

Climb to the top of the temple and be rewarded with sweeping views of the valley. A truly magnificient site steeped in history and a ‘must see’ while in Kathmandu. The temple is also known as ‘Monkey Temple’ referring to the many monkeys occupying the site.

Boudhanath

This is one of the world’s largest stupas. Boudhanath in Kathmandu is remarkable located in the north east of the capital the massive mandala of the Stupa makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal.

Thamel

Get into the spirit of Nepal with a visit to Thamel area. It offers lots of shops, restaurants, bazaars and markets and a vibrant nightlife, Thamel rocks.

To the Chitwan Jungle

The quickest way to the Chitwan National Park is to fly from Kathmandu to Bharatpur Airport which is close by the Park and the small town of Sauraha where most people stay. However, if you are brave, hire a driver and vehicle, and set off on road.

We drove down from Kathmandu which took us about 5 hours. Admittedly an awesome drive, lovely scenery en-route, however it is not a trip for the faint-hearted. The roads are busy but it is particularly the driving habits which are just insane. But on the bright side we saw no accidents but witnessed some really silly manoeuvres.

Where to stay in Chitwan

The Jungle Villa Resort is ideally located on the banks of the Rapti River looking into The Chitwan National Park. There is no accommodation located inside the park. The rooms are large, well-appointed and cool. The grounds are well kept, plenty of trees and the restaurant and particularly the deck area is amazing. The deck overlooks the river and provides a great location to sit back and enjoy an ice cold Gorkha beer. The food is buffet style and consisted of authentic Nepalese cuisine as well international favourites, it was tasty and well presented.

The management and staff well really hospitable and went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. The management organises daily escorted trips into the park using well maintained four-wheel drive land cruisers. For me the huge prize with this resort is that it is located right next to the Chitwan National Park which is why we were here.

Jungle Villa know how to get a beer properly cold, after a hot day traversing the park, it was perfect!

Chitwan National Park

The Chitwan National Park covers an area of approximately 930 square kilometres.

Game includes 43 species of mammals including the Bengal tiger, leopard, sloth bears, striped hyenas, Bengal foxes, wild dogs, jackal and three species of cats including; fishing cats, leopard cats and jungle cats. The one horned rhinoceros are numerous and we saw plenty on a game drive.

There are 543 species of birds recorded in the Chitwan National Park making the park a haven for bird watchers. Interesting raptor species include Pallas fish eagle, greater spotted eagle and eastern imperial eagle. Other interesting species include blossom headed parakeet, Bengal florican, Gould’s sunbird, black chinned yuhina and slaty breasted rail. The Chitwan jungle is also home to the king cobra, rock python, mugger crocodiles, monitor lizards and gharials.

To Pokhara

Fly to Pokhara, it’s the quickest but if you drive it is around 5 hours. Pokhara is built around the Phewa Lake against the backdrop of the magnificient Himalayan Mountains.

It is the most spectacular setting, popular with international and local tourists. Lakeside is the main tourist area around the lake, providing many hotels and other accommodation providers, many restaurants and vibrant bars.

Where to Stay in Pokhara

Time to Book

Air India offer probably the most direct route from the UK, but personally I would avoid them like the plague. It is not a great airline to travel with in my opinion; we had a shocking flight both ways. But many carriers offer connections via their hubs like Oman Air, Qatar, Turkish Airlines, Thai, Etihad, Singapore Airlines and many other airlines.

Personally from the UK the next time I travel to Nepal I will try Oman Air, they offer really good rates and a night or two in Muscat would be a bonus. Alternatively if you have never done Singapore or Thailand you could consider this as a route and possible stay-over.

Weather

The monsoon season normally runs from June to September. Flooding and landslides often occur during this time. Road travel anywhere can be hazardous, particularly in rural areas.

Nepal has it all, magnificent snow-capped Mountains, tropical jungles, warm welcoming and hospitable people all inter-connected with a rich and varied history and culture.
